There is no honest flat price for raising a house. Two homes on the same street can come in tens of thousands of dollars apart because of their foundations, size and how high they need to go. What we can do is explain what drives the price so you can read a quote with confidence. As a broad rule, house raising in South Louisiana is a five-figure project at minimum, and large slab homes or tall lifts can reach six figures.
The biggest cost factors
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Foundation type | Pier-and-beam homes are generally the least expensive to raise. Slab homes cost more because the slab must be lifted or replaced with a new framed floor. |
| Square footage and weight | Bigger, heavier homes need more beams, jacks, piers and labor. Brick veneer adds weight and may need special handling. |
| Lift height | Going from one foot to eight or more changes the foundation design, materials and engineering. |
| New foundation type | Masonry piers cost less than reinforced concrete or driven pilings, which may be required in higher-risk zones. |
| Site access | Tight lots, fences, trees, pools and nearby structures slow the job and add labor. |
| Utilities and extras | Extending plumbing and electrical, raising the AC, new stairs or a lift, and driveway changes are all real costs. |
| Engineering, survey and permits | Engineered plans, elevation certificates and permit fees are part of every legitimate project. |
Costs people forget to budget
- Temporary housing while the home is in the air
- Stairs and landings that meet code, or an elevator or chair lift
- Storage for belongings
- Landscaping and driveway repairs after heavy equipment
- Interior touch-ups, since minor sheetrock cracks are common after a lift
Ways to lower the cost
- Grants and ICC. FEMA mitigation programs can cover a large share for eligible homes. See FEMA elevation grants.
- Combine projects. If you need foundation repairs or leveling anyway, doing them during the raise avoids paying to mobilize twice.
- Raise to the right height. Going higher than required costs more. The engineer can show the cost difference per foot.
- Compare complete quotes. Make sure each bid includes the same items.

Common questions
Why do house raising quotes vary so much?
Quotes often include different scopes. One may include utilities, stairs, AC platform and engineering while another leaves them out. Compare line by line, not just the bottom number.
Does flood insurance pay to raise a house?
A standard NFIP policy includes Increased Cost of Compliance coverage, up to $30,000, if the home is declared substantially damaged by a flood. It does not pay for a voluntary raise on an undamaged home.
Will raising my house increase its value?
It often helps, because the home is better protected and may carry lower flood insurance premiums, both of which matter to buyers in flood-prone areas. The effect varies by neighborhood.
